Flora and Fauna – July

Carolina Spicebush (photo by Lara Tomlin)

The lovely deep pink blooms of the Carolina Spicebush (Calychanthus x raulstonii “Hartlage Wine”) brightened a spot by the river for the first time! Planted with the help of volunteers, they are a welcome addition to the early summer landscape. Carolina Spicebush, as the name suggests, has spicy fragrant leaves and bark. Some say the flowers smell like a mix of banana and strawberry! Lara Tomlin
