Path and Landscape Plan gets Rave Reviews

On Oct. 8. 2022, the Conservancy presented a full-scale mockup of proposed landscaping and a path along Valley St. between Oakview Ave and Oakland Rd. across from Town Hall to garner public opinion. The pop-up, “Walk this Way” event simulated the path and gathered feedback from Maplewood residents on the plan, as well as provided opportunities to make kites, join in a scavenger hunt, and stroll the path with some walking shrubs! Visitors to the event, as well as to this website, completed a survey to gauge the Community’s interest in the project. All of the almost 60 responses supported moving forward with the project, seeing it as a major improvement to visitor experience.

The proposed project’s objective is to restore landscaping originally intended to buffer the park from the busy roadway along Valley St. It will also connect this area to the rest of the park’s interior pathway system, allowing walkers, runners, and field goers to avoid the narrow sidewalk. The Conservancy hopes to improve the experience of park goers of all ages by providing a safe and pleasant place to walk, improved access the ballfields, courts, and playground, and provide seating to enjoy the beauty of the landscape, which will be enhanced by trees, shrubs, and perennials. The plan was developed by landscape designer Jennifer C. Ryan based on historical documents.
